Greetings sports fans and welcome to another sun draped Sunday afternoon here in Las Vegas and nearby environs from Vegas Valley Sports Beat that funny little sports column that denies all charges categorically and refers all hate mail to its esteemed editor.

Turning our attention now to the ever-thrilling world of news where the news is the news of the day. The Las Vegas Review-Journal, and other sources, reported Friday that Richard Karpel, as the head of Karpel Public Affairs, and a longstanding champion of a free press industry, has been employed as its next Executive Director. He is expected to assume the mantle of leadership of the Nevada Press Association starting this Tuesday.

Karpel will be required to relocate to Nevada from Washington DC for the position as the NPA represents a wide variety of daily and weekly news publications, online news services, and other specialized news services in Nevada. The Lake Tahoe region of Northern California also falls under the NPA executive director’s new bailiwick as it were.

“I’ve always loved working with journalists, representing them,” Karpel said. “It’s about making the world a better place to live. To the extent we can contribute to that is something I feel good about going into the office every day.”

The change in management comes after the retirement of long-time NPA Executive Director Barry Smith this past October leading the NPA to throw a national search for a suitable replacement for Mr. Smith. The association’s board of directors voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Kapel Public Affairs on December 18.

Glenn Cook, NPA board president and executive editor and vice president for news at the Las Vegas Review-Journal stated in the press, “The Nevada Press Association could not have found a better person to lead the organization than Richard Karpel,” he further said that “Richard’s experience leading news industry trade groups will ensure the NPA remains an influential voice and a powerful advocate for Nevadans’ right to know.”

In my own opinion that cannot be better spoken. I heartily agree that Mr. Kapel brings to the table a refreshing attitude towards the free press and its responsibility to its readership. He also brings a vast variety of leadership experience in roles that will prove relevant in the days to come.
