Greetings sports fans and welcome to another beautiful Finally-it’s- Friday here in lovely sun-drenched Las Vegas, Nevada. Turning now to the wonderful world of live entertainment let me tell you about last night at the South Point Hotel and Casino’s Showroom where Frankie Moreno really wowed the audience.

By a show of hands at Frankie’s request, the number of people in attendance last night were there for the second time. Or more as in my own case. Last night was my 3rd time going to see Frankie and the band perform live at South Point and I was not disappointed in the least.

With my best friend, Jason in tow we arrived early to find a flurry of activity buzzing around the entrance to the Showroom. This flurry was centered mostly around the fearless leader of the Frankie Moreno Army, Kathy Cornelius and the ladies who run the fan-stand. My good friend and local real estate maven extraordinaire, David Lamer was there already, streaming live video feeds from the casino floor.

I got caught in one of those and all I can say is that if I didn’t come off like a total dork it certainly wasn’t for lack of trying.

The music was great and the crowd was awesome as always. Many very nice people were in attendance last night including Mrs. Nevada, the very lovely Mrs. Yelena Anter, and her court could be seen dancing in front of the stage along with myself and a bunch of other folks who seemed to be enjoying the music and themselves immensely. I know I did so anyone who feels like they did not

Last night was fan appreciation night and the FMA thought to give away a few prizes prior to drawing for the autographed guitar but that this was another one of those so well thought out plans that went astray was quickly in evidence.

Why yes, my phone’s camera does suck. Thank you for asking.

After having drawn a bunch of tickets whose owners all live out of state, drawing, Kathy Cornelius’s ticket once and another girl’s ticket twice which BTW got her booed by the entire audience who seemed to feel like the drawing was rigged. I did, however, admit that I felt bad about booing too because I do know that she would not have wanted for that to happen nor did she want any of the offered prizes. I hope she took it all in the spirit of fun which I believe it was intended by everyone; myself included.

Frankie’s parents were in attendance last night as they have been every night that I’ve seen the show, as were many locals and tourists alike. The raffle for the Frankie Moreno autographed guitar signed by Frankie and all of the members of the band.

Frankie is starting a Scholarship Fund for the Nevada School of the Arts.  He will raffle off this guitar signed by the entire band on Saturday, May 26th on his Facebook page.  Tickets are $5.00 each or 25 tickets for $100. All proceeds from the raffle will go to the Scholarship Fund.  You may purchase tickets at his upcoming shows through May 24th or by going to the contact page at; for information.

Do you have your reservations for June 8th and 9th at the South Point Showroom yet?  There’s a special package being offered for a 1 night’s stay, plus 2 tickets to Frankie’s show plus a food credit of $20.  If not then you need to call 702-796-7111 for reservations right away if not sooner. The music is always great and the company you find there is always top notch.

More Upcoming Events:

*Frankie will be entertaining folks at the Lake Las Vegas Food and Wine Festival May 27th.

* Symphony series continues:
Houston-August 31 – September 2nd
Omaha-October 6 – 7
Toronto-October 9-11
New York City -October 19

Have you been to a show recently?  Whatever venue you have attended, go to Yelp and give Frankie a 5 star* review.  This helps ensure that we continue to see Frankie at these awesome venues!

Thank you for supporting Frankie and the FMArmy. Be sure to follow the Rules of Engagement! We truly appreciate your support!

Greetings sports fans and welcome to a special Thirsty Thursday edition of Vegas Valley Sports Beat where I am celebrating my second birthday this year and being one year free of kidney cancer.

On October 4th of last year, I had my 12 centimeter sized left kidney removed along with a 10-centimeter sized tumor and all of the nasty little cancer cells that hung out with it. I am still a long way from being 100% again but I keep plugging away at it and working hard to build my strength back up. I’d love to say I am eating right, exercising, getting plenty of sleep, and that I even quit smoking but I cannot tell a lie, (It’s in my contract) That’s not going to happen.

Let us then turn our attention now to the world of sports and the season home opener for the Las Vegas Golden Knights as they welcome the Philadelphia Flyers to The Ice Castle at the T-Mobile Arena.

I have always liked the Flyers but I have lived and worked all over the United States but, like many other fans of the Golden Knights, I have never lived in a hockey town before now. I have to admit that I love it and I love the Golden Knights as well.

The players might be a bunch of horses rear-ends that couldn’t field a full set of teeth between themselves much less a fair complement of brain cells, nor do they live here even though they front like they do for the news cameras but… I regress.

The fact is that it all has nothing to do with any individual, but of the team taken as a whole. 20 years from now when the Golden Knight’s bench is full, seasoned veterans,  bright young stars, and up and coming rookies alike, people are not going to remember many of the players who sit on it now at all. It’s all but a certainty that none of them will be there when the 2038-39 season gets underway.

Everyone has their favorite player and many people sport their jersey’s but in 20 years those jersey’s will be on the bargain racks at the local Goodwill store selling for $3.95. Meanwhile, the jersey’s of those fresh young players and veteran’s alike will still be selling like chocolate chip hot-cakes. As will all the other Golden Knight’s gear, some of which is pretty cool swag.

Another thing that will certainly be the same in the year 2038 is the fever and the fire that Las Vegas has for its hockey team which clearly stems from the pride Las Vegans have for our fair city.

Even though last season ended in defeat to the Washington Capitals, it was a miraculous season nonetheless. For an expansion team to take the NHL by storm and come that close to hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup in Las Vegas in their inaugural season is nothing short of wondrous. It set the heart of every hockey fan in Las Vegas on fire for the Golden Knights and that is always a good thing.

Coming as they did on the heels of the Route 91 massacre last year the Golden Knights also provided the people of Las Vegas with a unique way of coming together over something bigger than themselves and their worries of the day. Cheering for the Golden Knights is the same thing as cheering for Las Vegas and for all of the great folks who make it such an amazing place to live, work, and play.

You can argue and speculate on the causes of the cause all day long but the effects are undeniable. The Las Vegas Golden Knights have been the shot in the arm that this town needed, and they came to us at just the right time too. Welcome back, Knights.

The Las Vegas Golden Knight’s have announced their first outside viewing party of the 2018-19 season. It is slated for this coming Saturday at when they take on the Minnesota Wild in Minnesota at 5 p.m. Pacific.

Thursday night the  Golden Knights drop the puck on their 2018-19 season as they host the Philadelphia Flyers at T-Mobile Arena. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will feature a pregame ceremony welcoming the new season. Golden Knight’s fans can catch the game on NBCSN or you can listen to it live on FOX Sports Radio 98.9/1340 or ESPN Deportes 1460. Fans can also tune into AT&T Sportsnet at 5:30 for the premiere of “Knight Life,” the pregame coverage will begin at 6 p.m. Pacific.

A morning skate session by the Golden Knights will be held at City National Arena at 10:30 a.m. Admission to the event is free and it is open to the general public. Players, coaches, and broadcasters will walk the Gold Carpet on Toshiba Plaza starting at 3:30 p.m., and then Knight Time begins at 6:30 p.m. when the Golden Knight’s take to the ice for pre-game warmups.

Prior to the puck dropping in on the opening of the season, the Pacific Division Champions and Western Conference Champions banners are slated to be unveiled to attendees in the T-Mobile Arena rafters. The pregame ceremonies will also introduce the team and will feature a ceremonial puck drop.

For those of you who live in other locales, or who live in Las Vegas but need to be mobile while the games are on, there is a mobile app made just for you. You can stream the Las Vegas Golden Knights to your mobile devices and never miss a moment of the excitement and action as our Knights make their second run at the Stanley Cup at

Be it 2 months or 20 years from now I will neither know nor care who is, was, or who will be on the bench then or now but I will still love the Las Vegas Golden Knights franchise just the same as I’m sure will everyone else in town.

Every day is a fresh chance to begin anew and be the person you always knew you could be. Tonight (Thursday night) at 7 p.m. we begin anew and we capture that big silver loving cup named Lord Stanley and like a row of dominoes, knock the other contenders down one-by-one with precision, execution, skill,  determination, and dauntless persistence.

Happy hunting fellas. Now shut up, drop the puck, and

to me

Greetings sports fans and welcome to yet another thrilling adventure of, Vegas Valley Sports Beat. That quirky little column that has been spanning the globe to bring you a constant variety in liberal sports from left field to bring you a constant variety of whatever since 2018.

This is a special edition, or should I say eSpecial edition of this column in that it is being brought to you live through the magic of voice to text in Gmail, cut and paste, the editing magic of WordPress dot com, and last but certainly not least, Vegas Valley News dot com. With a very warm thanks going out to of which I am a member, for their innumerable contributions as well.I just finished watching Ant-Man And The Wasp and as a lifelong Marvel Comics fan, I was blown away, again. Of all the movies that have come from Marvel and the ever-marvelous mind of Stan Lee, God rest his soul, Ant-Man And The Wasp totally astounded me.I grew up consuming Marvel and DC comic books at five and ten cents a piece by the ton, and it would be nearly impossible for me to back a favorite super-hero and if I were forced to choose my answer would be the Teen Titans Go. But Ant-Man And The Wasp is truly an exceptional and moving film that for me was a delightful privilege to watch from start to finish.Ant-Man played by Paul Rudd teams up with Evangeline Lilly as Hope/The Wasp and her indomitable father Dr. Hank Pym who is played once again by the equally indomitable Michael Douglas.Ant-Man And The Wasp is a funny, yet hopeful romantic adventure into the brave new frontier of physical reality in a quantum field.  attempt to find Hope’s mother, Janet Van Dyne and bring her back home again.Janet Van Dyne, as fans of the first Ant-Man movie will recall, has been trapped inside a sub-atomic wilderness in the quantum realm for 30 years. But there is a ghost in the machine that wants to destroy it all in order to save herself from imminent death. A little girl who grew up with her molecules being torn completely apart and put together again every day wants to destroy Dr. Pym’s quantum tunnel in order to end her pain. Wildly the heroes race while the Feds and the villains give chase.Striving desperately against the sub-atomic clock our heroes fight tooth and nail to find Van Dyne while Michael Peña (who plays Louis), the entire crew of X*CON Security, the full weight of the FBI, a really bad, bad guy Walton Goggins  (who gets his just deserts in the end BTW), Ava The Ghost played by Hannah John-Kamen and Laurence Fishburne chase one another all over San Francisco in a brilliantly produced game of keep away with a high-rise laboratory building that refuses to stay in one place for very long before somebody else comes along and runs off with it again. It is a wonderfully fun adventure the entire family will love as around and around they go under the capable direction of Peyton Reed,It’s beautiful, fun and it’s definitely crazy but it’s such a wonderful ride that I give it 12 Gold Stars out of 10. I am awarding Ant-Man And The Wasp 1 extra Gold Star because Stan Lee appears in it, and I contend, ladies and gentlemen that a second much-deserved Gold Star is warranted in this instance because for the first time in my life I sat through an entire movie without smoking a cigarette in my own home when I didn’t have to. It was that mesmerizing for me and it was very moving too. Well played. BRAVO! BRAVO!I am not one to exaggerate or oversell anything for anybody so I stand by my word. If you and your family have not seen it yet you owe it to yourself and them to do so as soon as possible. That’s a fact. And if that ain’t enough to make you flip your wig here’s a list of Stan Lee’s projects due out in 2019 courtesy of Widow (executive producer) (pre-production) 2019Panda vs. Aliens (executive producer) (filming) 2019The New Mutants (executive producer) (post-production) 2019Spider-Man: Far From Home (executive producer) (post-production) 2019Dark Phoenix (executive producer) (post-production) 2019Avengers: Endgame (executive producer) (post-production) 2019Captain Marvel (executive producer) (post-production) 2019

Greetings once more sports fans and welcome back to a rare double-day edition of Vegas Valley Sports Beat where that spunky little sports column whose motto is I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never going to keep me down! But as long as I’m down there any way I might as well take a nap first.

Turning our attention once again to the wonderful world of wide sports, NABISCO announced today that they were going to introduce a super duper sized double-double stuffed Oreo cookie.

Speaking of bad tickers; retail dairy and whole milk prices rose sharply in trading, while public healthcare industries took a major beating on Wall Street.

While in other fake breaking news, Best Selling horror novelist, and self-styled political activist, Stephen King chastized President Trump today over the caravan of South American people who are currently marching for the U.S.-Mexico border. A mob which has stated an intent to cross into the United States illegally against the warnings of the Oval Office.

In this statement, King said that the caravan was basically just a group of tired and hungry people. Trump is rumored by a noted rumorologist (whose name has been withheld solely for the sake of convenience) to have tweeted back; Yes Mr. King, but so are zombies, as I’m sure you must already know. Since you’re such an authority I’m sending them all to your house so you can feed, clothe, house, bathe, and sort them out with the INS for a grateful nation who thanks you for your service. Not.

Okay so President Trump didn’t really say that but he should have. It’s never too late you know.

And now from the wide world of real sports news, the Dallas Cowboys squared off against the hated Washington Redskins in DC. Coming into this game, Dallas was 4-0 over the past two seasons against Washington who were no doubt looking to put an end to it and take the lead in the NFC East if they could. They did.

On their opening drive on 2nd down and 10 from the Dallas 37 Smith connected to Bibbs at the Dallas 26,  and Bibbs ran it the rest of the way into the end zone for the first score of the game. That was the first time in their last 12 games that the Cowboy’s defense has allowed an opponent to score on their opening drive.

Ahead now to the 2nd quarter. With 1:07 left in the half, Dak Prescot took the snap on Washington’s 49. Stepping back deep to throw Prescot connected on a gorgeous long bomb spiral to #13 Michael Gallup at the 15 from his own 43 like a wire-guided missile. Gallup easily ran into the end zone a mile ahead of the nearest defender for his first NFL touchdown and a beauty at that.

Congratulations Michael, you’re not a touchdown virgin anymore.

With 9:14 left in the 3rd quarter Washington attempted a 21-yard field goal on 4th and goal making the score 10 -7 Redskins. With 12:37 left in the 4th quarter Washington kicked another 3 pointer from 25 yards out to bring the score to 13 – 7 before Brett Maher kicked a 47 yarder to make it 13-10. Redskins.

Then on 3rd and 14 on the Cowboys, 10 Dak Prescot took the snap from center, dropped back into the Redskin’s end zone and was hit by #91 Kerrigan who stripped him of the ball which rolled into the end zone before being snatched up by Preston Smith for a Washington touchdown.

With the score now at 20 – 10 and only 2:48 left in regulation, the Dallas offense had its work cut out for them and for a moment there it looked as though they would rise to the challenge.

Dallas lined up in an onside kick formation but the ball sailed into the Redskin’s end zone and they started at their own 25.

After an uneventful 3 and out series the Cowboys regained possession on their own 46 and proceeded to march the ball down to within Brett Maher’s effective range for field goals. That would have tied up the game and sent it into overtime where the Cowboy’s might have won given the level they were playing at. There at the end especially.

Excellent play calling, execution, and clock management got Dallas down to within a leg’s reach of a tie. And indeed they gave it hell too. No doubt about that. The only problem was that when they lined up the first time for a 46 yard field goal try,  #91  of the offense was called for a snap infraction and the 5 yard penalty made it a 52 yard attempt instead.

When Brett Maher’s foot made contact with the ball I’m sure everyone was, as sure as I was sure it was a sure thing, sure it was going to be good for 3 points and for the tie. But as the last seconds expired from the play clock, the ball hit the center of the left upright and was deflected away making it no good.

The Redskins finally broke that 2-year losing streak to the Dallas Cowboys and take the lead in the  NFC Eastern division, while Dallas falls back into third behind the 2017 World Champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Both teams meet again on Thanksgiving Day in Arlington, Texas at 1:30 PST

The final score:

Washington Redskins – 20 (4-2)

The Dallas Cowboy’s   – 17 (3-4)

Fuck Cancer

And I say it not once my dear friends but twice now in my own lifetime, I can say what the pocket of my shirt said on October fourth, 2017 when I went into the operating room and beat cancer for the second time in my life.

This was drawn on my shirt pocket.

Indulge me for a moment won’t you please should I digress, but in my lifetime I have lost a large number of the people I loved to various cancers including more than one to brain tumors. One of whom was an intimately close friend named Tinker.

In fact, out of our little circle of six close friends in Virginia, Sandra died of heart disease and her husband Michael died after a long battle with throat and mouth cancer. The other lady, Joanie died of an embolism in her brain at work. Her husband was scheduled to begin chemotherapy a few days later but missed his window of opportunity to handle her funeral and he succumbed to the disease after a long slow battle.  My girlfriend,  Tinker, also had tumors in her stomach, well you already know her fate.  Only one of them survived.

I'm Still Standing

But I know I am never alone for Thou art with me. Your love is my rock, my strength when I am weakest, my light when it is darkest, my comfort, my joy, and my courage when I have nothing else left with which to overcome fear. These things I know in my heart are what love is, and I know that all things shall perish and fall into dust, but love survives forever.

Among my other proud moments, I helped build the new Children’s Research Hospital. The big beautiful pink one in Memphis, Tennessee. I put in, among other things, the emergency stairway that runs down to the basement from the first-floor, close to the elevator shaft which I nearly fell into a few times while my partner was welding the stairs to the wall because I was so tired.

If you are unable to contribute your time or talents you can contribute supplies needed for individual and group activities.
The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.

Most of the time I was on that job I slept in my car rather than commute back and forth from Coal Hill, Arkansas to Memphis every day. But not every day. It has the distinction of being the only place where I ever fell asleep two times while I was walking over to start work on those same stairs.

I also helped set up the crane that set all of that beautiful pink stone that surrounds it for another contractor. We were rigging the grandfather block on our crane when their foreman got mad because his men had screwed up the rigging and he nearly broke my hand because of them while I was trying to show them how to fix it. Ours was correct so when he smarted off about a dollar waiting on a dime the only thing he had going for him was that he was already at a hospital.

I took a pay cut to get the job with Brown & Root and it was only supposed to have lasted for a few days but I was there for some weeks. Every day when I went to the hospital’s cafeteria (which BTW has great food, cheap) I saw hundreds of children of every age and every race and they all had one thing in common.

They all had cancer of course and I had hair down to my waist. I always wore a skullcap bandana over it to keep it from getting tangled in the webbing of my hard hat or the Timex Ironman watch I had in the web to let me know when it was lunchtime. Naturally, I got a lot of haunted looks that were filled with pain and longing from the sad brave eyes of some of the young girls and even some of the young boys who had lost their own hair to chemotherapy and or radiation therapy treatments. One horror show I am blessed to have been spared from so far.

But the sun is shining the birds are singing in the trees. Unless you are waking up to find that you have somehow managed to reach room temperature while you were sleeping it is simply a spectacular,  Saturday afternoon here in the beautiful Las Vegas valley.

It’s a great day to be alive because it means it’s another last chance to be the person you always thought you could; try not to blow it again. How can he say such nonsense you might wonder? Oh, it’s easy I can assure you. As of today, I myself am fifteen months, 15 days but not yet fifteen hours, as this writing goes to press, cancer free.

Or so my Doctor says.

If the truth be told I can’t call it from where I live because it’s an everyday battle struggling with ceaseless pain that fluctuates between level 4 – 10 and it’s usually for no discernable reason. But it’s both from having cancer and from the ravages of a lifetime of working my ass off hanging iron. Like Betty Davis said, getting old ain’t for sissies.

Neither is surviving cancer.

On the morning of October 4, 2017, I went into surgery at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas I lost my left kidney to a malignant stage 2 tumor that, according to the Pathologist’s report weighed in at a respectable 10 centimeters while my former kidney tipped the scales at 12.

In 1966 the science of Oncology was primitive by the standards of today but I survived. Once you’ve had cancer or even a benign tumor such as the one I had from birth you cannot help but think about it from time to time and the older you get the more you tend to think about it and wonder more and more if it will stay gone or if it will someday soon try to make a comeback, but as a more virulent form of cancer.

About nine years ago I had a growth called a pterygium removed from that same left eye and when it appeared it looked like a yellowish mass was growing out across my eyeball. I was a bit concerned as you might expect but my Ophthalmologist assured me it was nothing more than a lesser type of growth and he removed it by laser surgery in an outpatient clinic. Perhaps to him, it was nothing much but not to me.

Great Children's Charities You Can Trust

The American Cancer Society is working to finish the fight against every cancer in every community. We are the largest private, not-for-profit funder of cancer research in the United States, investing more than $4 billion since 1946. Thanks in part to our contributions, more than 1.5 million lives have been saved in the US in the past two decades. Now, that is a reason to celebrate, so please join us.

Elvis was always eager to help charities. Over the years he worked with many organizations, including the American Cancer Society, Salvation Army, Memphis Union Mission, Muscular Dystrophy, St. Jude and the March of Dimes.
